What You’ll Need

  • A soft, flexible measuring tape (not the metal hardware kind)
  • The bra you plan to wear on the wedding day, or something similar
  • The shoes or heels you’ll wear with the dress
  • A friend to help measure—it's nearly impossible to do this solo and get it right
  • Pen and paper to write down numbers immediately
  • Bare feet for height measurements, then switch to heels for length

Skip the shapewear and extra layers when measuring unless you're planning to wear them under your dress. Measure what you'll actually be wearing that day.

Necessary Measurements (Red Lines)

These 6 measurements work for most dress styles:

    1. Bust: This isn't your bra size. Wear the bra you're planning on (many dresses have built-in support, so factor that in). Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest—usually at nipple level. Keep your arms relaxed at your sides. The tape should be snug but not squeezing. If you're a DDD cup or larger, consider sizing up.

    2. Waist: Find your natural waist by standing straight and bending sideways—you'll see a crease. That's the spot, usually about an inch above your belly button. Wrap the tape around the narrowest part. Don't suck in or pull the tape tight. You need room to breathe, eat, and dance.

    3. Hips: Stand with feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and rear. This is typically about 7-8 inches below your natural waist. The tape should brush across both hipbones without digging in.

    4. Hollow to Floor (bare): The hollow is that little dip between your collarbones at the base of your neck. Stand barefoot with feet together and measure straight down from that point to the floor. This number is usually over 53 inches. Write down the exact measurement.

    5. Height (bare): Stand against a wall without shoes. Measure from the top of your head to the floor. Stand naturally—no stretching or slouching.

    6. Heel Height: Measure the height of the heel itself, from where it meets the sole to where it touches the ground. This matters for getting your dress length right.

    Additional Measurements (Blue Lines)

      These kick in for curvier figures or specific styles—skip if your basics cover it, but they're gold for avoiding bunching or gaps. Use the same relaxed stance.

      • Belly (Biggest Waist): If your belly is larger than your natural waist, measure around the fullest part. Keep the tape horizontal and don't pull it tight.
      • Hollow to Belly: Collarbone dip to that fullest waist spot.
      • Butt: If your rear is fuller than your hips, measure around the largest part—usually at the bottom curve of your hips. Stand straight with feet together.

      Collarbone dip to dress edge (mini/knee/tea/ankle/floor). Wear heels.

      Tips: Mini hollow-to-hem length (with shoes) is usually more than 31 inches, and floor hollow-to-hem length (with shoes) is usually more than 53 inches.

      Sleeve and Shoulder Measurements

        Arms/straps (off-shoulder, spaghetti)? Relax arm down.

        • Arm Length: Measure from your shoulder joint, down through the elbow, ending at the bony part of your outer wrist. Keep your arm slightly bent and relaxed.
        • Armhole: This is the circumference where your arm meets your shoulder and armpit. Wrap the tape in a loop around the top of your arm.
        • Biceps: Widest upper arm, muscles loose.
        • Cuff: Wrap the tape around your wrist at its fullest point, typically just above or around the wrist bone.
